Exploring the Wonders of Lanzarote: A Family Adventure

When it came to considering the Canary Islands, I must admit I had my doubts. The allure of places often associated with mass tourism and all-inclusive resort bars didn't quite captivate me. However, after hearing glowing reviews from people I trust, particularly about Lanzarote, a hidden gem with pockets of tranquility amid the tourist buzz, I was intrigued. With a promise of 100% sunshine and just a 4-hour flight from Brussels, I decided it was time to embark on a family trip to Lanzarote.

Where to Stay?

During my research, one accommodation stole my heart - Finca Malvasia. This charming property is a shining example of the architectural style popularized by Cesar Manrique, a local architect who stood up to mass tourism. It's absolutely stunning and perfect for larger families as you can rent the entire property. The owners are a delightful couple.

Here are some other fantastic options for your stay:

Vacation Rentals:

Casa Dominique: my next rental ;)

Casa Sua Lanzarote

Villa La Cabana Lanzarote

Buenavista Lanzarote

Hotels:

Palacio Ico in the historic town of Teguise

Alava Suites

Kamezi Boutique Villas on the south coast of the island

What to Do ?

Lanzarote is not short on attractions. Cesar Manrique's influence is evident in many must-visit locations. You can expect stunning settings and reasonably priced cafe-restaurants. See the full list of CACT (centers for art, culture, and tourism). Here are some highlights:

Jameos del Agua

Mirador del Rio

Casa Museo del Campesino

Montaña del Fuego - Timanfaya

Cueva de los Verdes

Cactus Garden

Cesar Manrique designed these locations, so you can expect a gorgeous setting and a high-quality café-restaurant at a reasonable price. Just right for morning coffee, lunch, and afternoon munchies!

For a dose of sun, sand, and surf, Famara Beach is Lanzarote's premier surfing spot, perfect for a family-friendly day by the black sand beach. Don't miss a ferry ride to the charming little island of La Graciosa from the island's north.

Beach Bliss

Lanzarote boasts numerous stunning beaches, including:

Papagayo in the south

Los Charcones

Playa de Caleton Blanco

But don't limit your adventure to the seaside; explore the island's inland cities like Teguise, Haria, and Tinajo for authentic experiences. Teguise, in particular, offers great coffee and fantastic tapas bars.

Coastal cities, such as Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife, are quite concrete and uninspiring.

For a unique experience, take a camel ride - it's touristy but kid-friendly.

Where to Eat ?

Tapas are a must in Spain, and Lanzarote adds its own unique flavors to the mix. Don't forget to sample some local wine from the vineyards carved into the island's volcanic soil. Here are some dining recommendations:

Be Papagayo on the beach of Papagayo

The Dunas of Famara Beach

The restaurant at Palacio Ico

The "Bubbles" at Villa Kamezi

Bodega Uga (more on my Mapstr)

Family-Friendly Destination

Lanzarote is incredibly family-friendly, and children are welcome everywhere. Renting a car is the best way to get around, and there are plenty of options if you have water park enthusiasts in your group.

Packing Essentials

Be sure to pack your Juillet Juillet anti-UV swimsuits, as the sun shines brightly. Don't forget sunscreen and sunglasses. Also, consider bringing "A Week Abroad," an excellent guide to the island, which I wholeheartedly recommend.

Shopping Spots

For some unique shopping experiences, explore the stores in Teguise and check out the boutique Room 314 at the Fariones Hotel.

Our family trip to Lanzarote was a true revelation. The landscapes, ranging from volcanic vistas to ochre earth, left us in awe. The island's unique light and diverse atmospheres have made it a favorite for fashion shoots, and it exudes a magnetic energy that's hard to describe. Lanzarote is the perfect destination for families or couples looking to escape to paradise in the fall or early spring, just a short 3-hour flight from Paris.
